My primary and secondary audience

My primary audience will be people who are fans of garbage the band and other alternative rock genre fans. Other alternative rock bands such as;
  • Nirvana
  • Pearl Jam
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Oasis
  • The Smashing Pumpkins
  • Green Day
  • The Killers
Their primary target audience is generally people who are around the age of 25-45 because the band was formed in the late 80's and 90's therefore the audience who were around the age of 20 then will be older now. These bands were also younger at the time therefore their audience could connect with the band. I will be getting audience feedback from my primary audience in the future and asking them for their opinions on the non-conventional music video I have created. However, with the female protagonist being a representative of the lead singer of 'Garbage' they will recognise and have the preferred reading of the music video. I have involved the lead singer enabling the audience to recognise the band and it being one of the only general conventions of the music video that I am involving in the music video 'My Night Drive Loneliness' by 'Garbage'.

The secondary audience would be yet older generation; such as people age 25-40 due to the fact that garbage were large at one point in the 90's. Therefore when they were big people now will be around the age of 40 and probably male.
tMy primary audience will be people who are in their late teens early 20's because of the dark rock theme in the music and I want this to be in the music video.
My secondary audience will be people in the mid teens and I think that my music video will be for all genders because their isn't a specific gender that is stronger for the audience of the other rock bands that I am taking inspiration from. However according to yougov.com the red hot chili peppers audience is leaning to more female listeners. .This could be because of the female gaze - because it is an all boy band females tend to be more attracted to them than males.
In my music band that I am using there is one female lead singer and the rest are male therefore there will be both male and female audience's. also the lead singer is part of the LGBTQ people therefore her audience is even more broad than the normal band.

Audience of Garbage

  • The audience of an iconic alternative rock band are generally the ages of 25-40. The band Garbage first released an album in 1995. Most people who are 40 now were 20 at the time of Garbage's first album being release; therefore have been audience members of Garbage since their first album . However because Garbage have been releasing music to this day their audience is still growing and now the age of their audience has a large range. The average age for their audience is 29.
  • Audience members may also generally be fans of Nirvana and the smashing pumpkins. Manson is about to be 50 this year, showing that the band have been around for a while and will continue for a while. At the moment he band are heavily focused on the gay rights and rights around the world for people. In one of her last gigs Mason is heavily in favor for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer) people. She proclaimed that "they still don't have the same rights as me". Not only does the band sing for fun but also for the rights of people and peoples rights.  With the band having strong feelings towards the LGBTQ people their audience are all fans of the LGBTQ people and some of them will be members therefore their audience is also well spread through the several different communities of LGBTQ.
  • The band also have a mixture of female and male audience members due the fact that as a band they have male band members and female therefore the female and male gaze will both be involved in being fans

Their first collection of music was created in 1995 and their album was called Garbage. This was the cover. The colour is bold and the pink feathers connote light and clean which is an binary opposite of the name garbage.

This was their second album cover. It is continuing with  the theme of bright blocked colouring. The orange is virbrant which also connotes the binary oppositions of the bright colours and the name of the band garbage.

This was their 2007 record. We can denote that the cover is darker and they have started with a darker theme to their CD covers instead of the binary opposite theme of the bright colours like in the 190's.

This is their 2016 album and there is a leopard in the shape of a G for garbage. The song that i am using 'night drive loneliness' is from this album. The green is a moss coloured green and the audience can infer that this album may be an indie grunge genre. They have continued with the darker theme.

Previous Videos:

Stupid Girl

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2GhPUAVgHZc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This video was one of their first songs and first music videos. The song involves a performance from the band instead of narrative. This is a typical convention of a indie/rock grunge band. the main singer is looking straight at the camera and this is an example of breaking the fourth wall and the mode of address is looking directly at the audience. The editing involves red lighting and blur lighting. We are also able to denote that there is 'Stupid Girl' written on the wall in a graffiti type of writing on the wall.  This implies a dark atmosphere and theme has a connection between the name of the band. The theme is dark and grungy because this was their initially upcoming video; therefore it is common for a music band to stick to normal genre conventions in the first video so that the audience are able to understand their theme and ideologies.

Why Do You love Me

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dcrv9nhH9iY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In this music video from 2005 the we denote the man singer getting up from bed. This implies a narrative performance. We can connote that the bed isn't her own bed, due to the fact there is a man laying next to her and she pulls the bed cover over her head connoting regret. There is also liar written above the bed letting the audience connote that the man isn't a very nice man. We can denote that she is singing the lyrics whilst in the narrative. Therefore not only is she creating a linear narrative of getting out of bed, having a bite to eat and then getting ready to practice, but in the music video she is also performing. We can connote that it is a closed linear narrative due to the fact it has a beginning, middle and an end. In the beginning we denote her getting out of bed in the same clothes and then wearing them throughout the next day. The next scene is in the kitchen where she runs into another man (which we can connote later on is another member of the band) who ignores her and gets on with his own morning. She grabs a bite to eat then applies more makeup to her face. The mode of address is that she is looking directly into the camera throughout this seen as if the camera is a mirror. We denote due to the camera angles changing from behind her that she is looking into the camera and audience as if they are a mirror and she is getting ready in front of. The next scene is her walking through the warehouse that we can connote is the bands house; and then they all come together and join to play the song. The next scene is her in the bath tub singer; the song goes slowly and the water is still. This shows a direct connection between the lyrics and the visuals. The music then goes fast paced and the visuals are bright lights and they are playing a live gig. We are able to connote that that the music video has been a narrative leading up to them performing a gig. This could be a representation of the bands daily lives. Getting up late and rehearsing and then singing live over and over.

Social media

Twitter:  https://twitter.com/garbage

Garbage also put out poster is Madison, Wisconsin. They have social media platforms so they are able to get into contact with their fans and get new fans through sharing and generally if one person is a fan all their facebook friends will see and perhaps become interested in the band and their audience platform will increase. In 2013 garbage released their first live performance on DVD for their audiences to watch. This shows that they are using all different types of medai platforms to sell their band and get their music known. In 2014 Garbage posted on thier facebook that they would be writing a book; this shows us that they communicate most over social media and get their tour dates out over the internet and social media.
Garbage also had their records in many shop windows all over America and they got thier main fan base from singing in small clubs all over America for 8 years.
