rough cut one

Here is a short clip of some of the footage I have shot so far,. This is a brief idea of what the main video will be like. In the first slow motion shot I will be using after effects to make it less 'jerky' in the final cut; however at the moment it is slightly rough. However, when the female is spinning Around it has been edited to look better than the original shot.
The female in the music video is representing 'Shirley Manson'. I have chosen for the female in the music video to represent Manson due to the fact it matches the general conventions of Garbage's music videos; all of which have Manson in them.

Audience

Here is the audience research from yougov. Here it states that their audience are mainly in their mid 20's and female. They are also left wing. However from my audience research i found that mainly males in their late 30's are fans as well as females.

Influences

I've taken inspiration from many different music videos and put them all into my music video. For example I have taken the idea from 'Call your girlfriend' and the female dancing alone with headlights behind her. The audience are still able to denote the female protagonist (Robyn) dancing, however there is a mist and a silhouette about the body whilst she is dancing. In my music video I will be using car headlights to light up the female protagonist who is dancing and this will create a silhouette and/or show emphasise on her dancing (depending on whether the car headlights will be behind or in front of her).

Also i have taken inspiration for the location from the music video 'U don't have to call' - usher. The setting is a carpark an there are cars in the background with their headlights on shining in the background.
I have also taken inspiration from many music videos that involve dancing in dark areas.
I have also taken major influence from the music video, 'little boots' by motorway. I will be filming thinking much like this in the dark but I will be lit with car lights and the editing (post film) I will be editing it to have a double shadow giving it the effect of what the audience can denote in this music video. The face high a low saturation and then a high hue. This makes the audience denote that she is empty and there is a distancing effect to this.
Even though my music video 'Night Drive Loneliness' by Garbage will not be in black and white much like 'Little Boots' I will be testing how an effect looks on the music video, I feel that this will add an effect that will increase the tension.

Slow motion changes

Here there is a video of a shot from my first shoot, in which the female protagonist is spinning around and the shot is out of focus then comes back into focus when she stops spinning around.
I used after effects here, due to the fact that in Final Cut pro the 25 frames per second that the shot was filmed on becomes 'jerky' and not smooth. Therefore on after-effects i used the time-relapse do slow down the 25 frames per second without making them 'jerky'. After effects 'adds' frames to the footage therefore making the film smooth to watch unlike in final cut. This is called pixel blending. The pixels are blending together and this makes the shots closer together therefore smooth.

Digipak Planning

The digipak will have continuous colour themes on each section. The images will be the female protagonist on the front and then inside the pack there will be other images such as the image above. i will increase the hue and saturation of the still to make the image more eye catching and vibrant.

There will also be some shot of her jumping in the air and this will be on the front or the back of the digipak. I chose this to be on the front of the digipak because the blur dress stands out and if i edit the image in photoshop to make it more vibrant it will stand out more and me emphasised. Picture below. Having this image in the front and then a darker still of her still in the dress on the back cover will allow the audience to connote that there is brighter start like in a video and then it ends on a darker note. This is also how the story line of the music video plays out. I w

Below is one of their past digipaks. Initially the band began as brighter colour themes throughout the digipaks and posters. However now they focus more on daker colours such as a mossy green and blacks. I will be continuing the theme of greens and blacks but instead of it being monotone colours it will involve a person on the front and in the inside of the digipak. The still shots that i will be using above will go not he inside and the outside of the didgipak. The front cover will have the female protagonist jumping in the air. I will also edit the still image no that the hue and the intensity of the blue dress with increase. I may also include the letter 'G' which has be added to all the other digipaks.

Below there is a template of the digipak i will be creating. I will be creating my digipack on illustrator and follow the instructions given by the colouring of the lines. Making sure that the images do not go over the lines and that all the images are straight and in line.
My digipak will involve the colours green, brown and black. The colours will spread across the digipaks and the posters for advertising. Spreading the colour scheme across all aspects of the music video, advertising and digipak will also audience members to identify the band 'Garbage' and realise what they are.

podcast 25/11/16

This is the podcast that I recorded on my phone whilst filming on the 25th. This was my first shoot and overall it went well and we got all the shots necessary and also I got images for the digipack. However the camera ran out of battery and we were unable to shoot an extra shoot that i would've wanted to film.

Choreographers

Choreographers that apply to my music video-

Martha Graham
-1930's choreographer
-Known as the godmother of choreography
-She did a famous piece called lamenation which is about sorry and grief and she uses an unusual costume to create  sense of writing and dancing about being in your  own skin.

Video about Martha Graham

Example

Above there is an example of Martha herself dancing in a long tight outfit. You re able to see the body parts moving and it is expressive. In my music video there will be the protagonist dancing in a long dress and she will be dancing carrying some long material throughout. From watching this video i can connote that each body movement is important in the dancing of 'Lamenation'.There is focus on the foot and then every movement is harsh and all the body parts that are necessary to move do and those who need to stay still do. There is no movement within the dance that is unnecessary.
Just from watching the music video I am able to denote that the costume is meant to be representative of a mother layer of skin and that the protagonist is fighting within their own skin and the dancing is showing the emotions.

Pina Bausch
-Tends to have dancers in long dresses battling the elements (wind, air, water and rocks etc.).
-German performer and choreographer of modern dance and ballet.

Example

Above there is an example of the choreographer Pina Bausch and here the dancer is wearing a long red and black dress. This is meant to represent her battling the fall season. There is also a male protagonist helping her survive. We can denote that the female protagonist is weak and she keeps falling and the man keeps catching her.

Planning 25/11/16

Toady i will be filming at Fewston reservoir and i will be filming the dancing in the road scene and possibly a photoshoot for my digipack.

There was a slight issue with the initial dates. She cannot film on the 27th of november now so we will have to rearrange some dates to get  all the filming finished. I then sent her a long paragraph about the details of the shoot today and asked her to choreograph some dances to specific times of the songs that i need.

There was then another issue with dates therefore we we film today i will be recording a podcast and i will state the other dates we have decided to film on. She also stated that she will send me her choreography ideas.

she was giving me ideas about a variety of shots and then this was the planning for before the shoot.

She then sent me a picture of a blue dress that she has. This goes along with the lyrics of 'blue velvet dress'. An issue with the costume so far is that the dress is not velvet. However because some of the shots will be in the dark it hopefully won't make too much of a difference.
In this image we are discussing the times of when we are going to film on the Friday (today). We also discussed what would be easier for the protagonist and where to film.
We have deciding on meeting at Fewston reservoir at 2pm on Friday the 25/11/16. We also discussed the makeup and props. Therefore we decided that as long as we keep one look and a constant makeup look, it would be appropriate.

She was also mentioning a choreographer called Martha Graham and gave me details about her in which i will be progressing into another blog post. She then mentioned another choreographer called Pina Bausch. Bausch relates to my music video and the dance that Anna has created because she uses long dresses and battles against the elements. Today we will be filming outside therefore the protagonist will not only be battling her inner self but also the outdoors.

Animatic

This is my animatic video in which i downloaded the music and put the shots of the story board to the music in the correct way.

  • First I scanned the drawings of the storyboard and put them onto a USB cable.
  • Then entered the USB into the MAC and then cropped each picture into six different frames.
  • I then put the frames on to final cut and then added the frames to the timings that I would put them at i9n the real music video.
  • I also manually entered the cutaway shots in final cut. My music video will involve a lot of cutaway shots to break up the footage to keep the audience interested.

GoPro Footage

This is some test footage on the GoPro hero4. I entered the footage into final cut and because I had to put a 60p into a 30p project on final cut the footage was initially very bad quality therefore i had to change the automatic speed and apply it to the footage. The helped the footage become a normal speed instead of half the speed that it was initially due to it being above the 30p.

I then applied some test filters on the footage and tested to see what it would be like. Even though this test footage is in day light and it would be darker when i would be filming. The colour of the filter was too blue therefore i took the black colouring down.

Planning 9/10/16

9/10/16

I called the female who is going to be the protagonist in my music video. We discussed brief dates and we have three days planning for filming. We will be filming on the 20th, 25th and 27th of November so far.

After the call i sent her a link to my blog so that she was able to read through it and get a better idea of my ideas and we were on the same page. I also asked her to choreograph some dance moves to the song and told her what the song was about and explained that my idea was contemporary dance in different locations.
Now that she has read through my bog she will now know what she is wearing and she is going to send me some picots of dresses that she has available.

Previous Garbage Videos

'I think I'm paranoid' is in black and white and all throughout, there is performance. The lead singer (Shirley Manson) is the only person we can denote in the music video. There is a long shot and we can denote her whole body and the mode of address is her looking directly at the camera whilst singing.
There is also some extreme close shots of her mouth singing the song  - lip syncing the lyrics. We can denote that she is wearing the dark lipstick and that the song is clearly a dark music video. The lyrics state 'ring me, tame me you can never change me' and 'bend me break me anyway you need me'  this comes before the initial quote, from this order we can connote that as the song is progressing we can tell that she is getting more and more fed up of the  controlling relationship. From this we can connote that the song is potentially about a relationship that is controlling and initially she is going with the flow and saying that 'i think I'm paranoid, manipulated' .
There are also close shots of other body parts such as her legs and her dancing around. The location is a plain white background which is very simple and attracts attention to the female protagonist in the music video. 'I fall down just to give you a thrill', here we can easily connote that in the beginning of the relationship she was willing told o anything to please the other person in the relationship. Even through they were pushing her down she was infatuated by them and it was conditional love.

Again in this music video there is the female protagonist in the front and she is singing the lyrics. Therefore performing again, like in the previous video. Where as in this music video she is with the rest of the band and they are also in what looks to be a plain room; however in this music video there is writing on the wall stating 'Stupid Girl' and things such as 'bitch'. The audience can connote from the lyrics and the writing on the walls that there is girl that is a fake and she is constantly lying and destroying the relationship. From initially watching the music video i can connote that there is some narrative enigma about who the song is about because she is singing the song; however she is singing about a stupid girl who is a compulsive liar and is trying to please people. The audience are unsure if she is singing about herself or another female. That either she or another member of the band has been in a relationship with. However looking further into it, The Clash (band) were involved in composing the song song with Shirley Mason and the other members of the band. However looking into the music video, the song was actually written before Shirley Mason joined the group. The rough edit was written by Vig. Vig took a loop from the first 3 seconds of the song 'Train in vain' by the clash for inspiration. the song was about various people that he band new. They could've called it 'Stupid Boy' but they Shirley stated in an 1999 interview ((Wikipedia)) that it would be tedious to have another girl dinging about another foolish boy.

Mis-en-scene

Throughout the music video i will need minimal props and costume. I will using the surrounding locations to their potential.

Make-up: Dark eye makeup, black and blue eyeshadow and dark purple lipstick throughout
Costume: Blue dress, leggings and a long sleeved top underneath the dress so that she is comfortable and warm. she will also be wearing black dance shoes.

Location One
Fewston Reservoir -
I will be filming at Fewston reservoir and it will be in the middle of a quiet off road that has overhead trees. The over head trees give the shot a darker feel due to the shadows. I will be using the car lights that we will have to drive in to get to the location as lighting for the scene. This will give the impression of the silhouette. the protagonist will also be wearing a blur dress due to the lyrics mentioning a blue velvet dress. However due to the weather conditions she will also be wearing leggings and a top underneath because i don't want her to freeze to death. Also because she will be dancing it is better that she in comfortable.

Location Two
Ilkley moor (cow and calf rocks) -
Here I will be filming in the back circle of the cow and calf rocks.

I will be filming stop start motion hear of her dancing. Due to the lighting being rather dark because of the surrounding rock i will be going here at around 12pm on the day. The audience will be able to denote the protagonist. In this section of the music video the female protagonist will be shaking her head and showing that she is slowly loosing her mind. Here she will be wearing the same clothes and her make will be the same also.

Location Three
High Rhoyds abandoned building mention -
Here she will be dancing in the centre. I will also be walking around and getting tracking shots of her exploring the building.

Story Board

These are the story boards for my music video. There are a few more shots that this however they will occur in the moment.

Location - Fewston Reservoir

I've been to Fewston reservoir to check if there would be shots that would fit with the plot of the music video. For example i needed a shot of a road and a waterfront. I took the shots on my phone and this is one of 4 locations i will be visiting in the process.

This picture was taken on the way to Fewston reservoir. The road will not be able to be used for my protagonist to be in the middle due to the fact that the cars along this road going over 30MPH.

Whilst taking this low shot picture; this is an idea of the angles of camera whilst the protagonist is in the middle and a car behind lighting her up.However this road will not be accessible due to me nearly getting hit by a car just taking this picture. However i have found a similar road next to Fewston reservoir that i will be able to use safely.

This is the road that i will now be able to use. This road is right next to the reservoir therefore giving me the ability to take shots of the reservoir throughout the video. The reservoir being next to the road gives me the ability to take transition shots. The trees will also shoe a good effect when the lighting is darker; this photo was taken at 3pm however i will be going to film at 4pm therefore the sun will be setting. I doesn't matter to my filming whether it is cloudy or darker.

I will also be filming next to the reservoir in between the trees. Here i will be doing stop start motion and the lighting will be extremely dark. Therefore i will be filming at 5pm on the same day of the filming in the road. With the water in the background there will be the effect of the threat of water and the low wide shots; we will be able to see the background and the silhouette of her dancing in between the trees as well as the stop start motion of her jumping around the area.

This is some of the footage that the audience may denote in the music video; however they will see the protagonist in the footage instead of just the reservoir. The footage will not be as varied and will only last a few seconds. This is an extended version of what wlil be in the music video.

This is another sample video - i used my iphone to put slow motion on the video. This is me walkign down the road in which i will use to film.
